How you can help At Bike Box Project, every step we take is fueled by the support of people like you. In 2020, with the help of local grants, we took a powerful step forward—launching Rock Steady Boxing , a fitness program specially designed to help people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) fight back. This empowering class gives individuals with PD the tools to improve strength, balance, and confidence through movement—and hope through community. Thanks to growing participation and continued support, we proudly opened our very own gym and Bike Box Project headquarters in August 2022 . This space is more than just a gym—it's a beacon of resilience, connection, and progress for those living with Parkinson’s and their caregivers. But our mission doesn’t stop there. We are deeply committed to supporting people with Parkinson’s in our local community , raising awareness, and funding resources to improve their quality of life. Your involvement makes a lasting impact. Your Donation Can Change a Life Your generous gift goes far beyond dollars—it becomes a lifeline. Every donation helps provide vital programs, adaptive equipment, and access to fitness classes that empower individuals with Parkinson’s to reclaim their strength and independence. Whether it’s helping someone take their first step into Rock Steady Boxing or giving a caregiver the support they need, your support brings real hope to real people. No amount is too small, and every contribution makes a difference. Donate Now Here’s How You Can Help: Donate – Every contribution helps us expand programs, provide equipment, and keep our gym running. Volunteer – From event support to hands-on class assistance, your time can make a real difference. Sponsor a Class or Program – Help someone with PD access specialized fitness and wellness programs. Spread the Word – Share our story and mission to raise awareness in your network. Partner with Us – Local businesses and organizations can amplify our impact through sponsorship and collaboration. Together, we can bring strength, hope, and support to those who need it most. How you can help Dear family and friends, It’s been just over four years since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). I am taking a multi-pronged approach to help me meet the challenges of a life with PD with the hope of slowing the progression as much as I can. In addition to my traditional medications and treatments at Duke Neurology and the UNC Movement Disorder Clinic, I am a patient at a Parkinson’s Disease Modification Clinic in Seattle that also incorporates nutritional science, and Naturopathic Medicine as part of my treatment regimen. I’ve also added cranial bio-modulation (infrared and near infrared) into my daily routine with a medical device developed by a physician and engineer in Australia. Of everything I do, nothing has brought me better, more quantifiable results (physically and mentally) than a program called Rock Steady Boxing. While the headquarters is based in Indiana, I attend the affiliate located in New Bern, NC - owned and managed by a non profit called the Bike Box Project. www.bikeboxproject.org In 2016, The founder (Bethany Richards) came up with the idea of mounting a mailbox on the back of her bicycle to create awareness, while helping raise funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation earmarked for pharmaceutical research aimed at a cure for PD since her father had recently been diagnosed. In 2020 she became certified as a Rock Steady Boxing Coach herself while becoming the affiliate for Rock Steady Boxing for eastern NC. Her dedication and commitment to serving the Parkinson’s community has resulted in going from a small program (with 4 or 5 boxers) with rented space inside an existing fitness center to recently acquiring her own facility that is exclusively dedicated to helping folks with Parkinson’s - like her father and me. We now have about 150 boxers registered at our new gym with a grand opening next month . Since being diagnosed, I have had the opportunity to visit other Rock Steady Programs throughout the US and the one in New Bern is by far the most successful and best managed program I have participated in. Bethany has attracted a team of coaches and volunteers (cornermen) second to none. The entire team is absolutely wonderful. The program offers classes 4 days a week and focuses on improving balance, coordination, stamina and flexibility - all the things most commonly affected by PD. Having been an athlete in my former life, I am accustomed to being around those who are disciplined and strong willed but now I am surrounded by a group of determined warriors with the gumption and spirit to fight even harder against a shared enemy - Parkinson’s. We have boxers ranging from wheelchair confinement to those having just been diagnosed. April 11th is National Parkinson’s Day and I have personally committed to raising $10,000 myself to help fund some new equipment for our new space. On April 9th, I am competing against my fellow boxers to see how many “sit to stand” exercises I can do. My record is 127 and I’m hoping to beat it this year. How can you help? You can help by sponsoring me and making a tax deductible contribution. By doing so, you are helping me [and my peers] fight this neurological progressive disease. I don’t take anything for granted anymore. Something as simple as being able to get up from a chair unassisted had become too hard but through the Rock Steady Boxing program, I have been able to improve my core strength, balance and coordination. I wish I would have saved videos of me when I first came to Rock Steady compared to how well I’m doing now but that’s just one example of many. Bike Box Project is a qualified 501(3) C non-profit organization - tax ID #83-1678144. If you are interested in helping me meet my goal, please text me and let me know how much per “sit to stand” I can count on along with a maximum of a specific amount you would like to pledge. For example $1 for each “sit to stand” would be $200 if I could make it to 200 but if you set a maximum of $150 then you only write a check for $150 even if I were to make it to 200. One friend (who knows me well) has proposed $2 for the first 100 and $5 for each one between 101-125 and $10 for each one from 126 and up with a maximum contribution not to exceed $600. He tapped in to my competitive spirit! Yes, that same person designs sales compensation plans for his company and appreciates performance based plans . Figures! After I hear from you, I will send you the address to send your check but please make it out to The Bike Box Project. Please respond to me by next Tuesday (April 8th) so I can submit your information on a single sheet to ensure your contribution is credited to my effort. Call or text me if you have any questions or you can email me at wzfoster61@gmail.com Thank you in advance for your friendship over the years and giving me hope in my fight against Parkinson’s. With your help, we’ve got this!
